Hi, This Is The Unicorn Cake I Made For My Sister In 1998 It Was A Huge 17 Inches Tall And About 17 Inches Long. The First Sculptured Mud Cake Like This I Made & Still A Favourite With Everyone That Sees My Albums. So I Thought I'd Add It Here Even Though It Was 9 Years Ago.
The Cake Was Cut From A 15 x 15 x 3 Inch Square Milk Chocolate Mud Cake & Assembled On The Board Which Had A Dowel Drilled Into It & A Cross T Piece To Support The Head. The Head & Body Where Iced With Warm Chocolate Fudge Separately, Which Sets Quite Firm ( It's Actually A Chocolate Fudge Recipe ) The Head Had A Cross Of Dowel Or Skewers In It As Well So I Tied This To The Top Of The Dowel Running Up From The Board To The Top Of The Neck. Then Iced The Whole Thing With Plastic Fondant Icing. Adding Ears & Horn Later, The Legs Are Just Formed By Hand From The Excess Fondant By Pushing Into The Cake Above To Add Detail.
The Tail & Mane Are The Same Chocolate Fudge That I Use To Ice The Cake But When Nearly Set Put It In A Large Piping Bag With A Large Star Nozzle & Kneed It Until Smooth If Too Firm To Pipe. Here I Used Milk & White Chocolate Fudge Together For The Variegation. The Horn Is Just An Apricot Coloured Coil Of Fondant, Wrapped Around A Skewer & Highlighted With Gold Edible Colour, Same With The Hooves, Eyes, Nose & Mouth.
Total Time 13.5 Hours, I Still Have All My Notes From When I Made Cakes Part Time & They Come In Handy...
Thanks For Looking...
Sorry About The Poor Quality I Had To Scan An Old Photo...
Any Questions Or Comments Appreciated...
& I'll Be Adding A Few More Old Ones When I Have Time...
OMG - that is absolutely amazing! My daughter wants a Unicorn cake for her 5th Birthday coming up. Any chance I can get hold of a copy of your notes as I would love to try and make this for her.
Would love it if you could send them. Very much appreciated.
